The ceremonial urn stands as a powerful symbol of innovation, collaboration, and the educational value of design. This project brings together multiple disciplines within Design & Technology, offering a hands-on learning experience that bridges creativity with technical execution.
The journey began with the creation of the torch—a contemporary, minimalist interpretation of the Malta School Games logo, itself inspired by the Maltese cross. This design served as the conceptual and visual foundation for the urn, uniting symbolism with modern aesthetics.
Designed by Mr. Keith Galea and brought to life at the Design & Technology Learning Centre, the torch and urn were the result of a collaborative effort involving a dedicated team of educators, designers, and technicians. Their mission: to transform a bold idea into a striking, interactive structure that celebrates both form and function.
Apart from its bespoke craftsmanship and its skilful production, a standout feature of the project is its interactive electronic component, which adds a powerful symbolic dimension. As the torch completes its ceremonial walk, it engages a system of interactive electronics that transfers the torch’s light energy, triggering an elaborate and symbolic sequence to ignite the electronic flame within the urn. This moment marks the culmination of the torch’s journey and the official commencement of the Malta School Games, blending tradition with modern technology in a visually striking and meaningful way.
Beyond its visual impact, this project serves as a dynamic educational tool. It demonstrates how thoughtful design can communicate identity, evoke emotion, and solve real-world challenges. Students involved in the process gained practical experience in areas such as product design, electronics, materials engineering, and teamwork skills that are essential in today’s creative and technological landscape, which is what D&T is all about.
The ceremonial urn now stands not only as a centrepiece of the Games but also as a celebration of the human spirit, creativity, and the transformative power of Design & Technology education.
